Welcome to the fastest vintage motocross bikes page.
| Those of you shopping for a AHRMA motocross mount will find this almost useless information helpful. Todays modern 2 cycle oil is going to make these bikes run like never before. The rule has always been 90% rider and 10% bike, so if your favorite machine is not on this page, it still makes you a winner.
What is fast? Fast is winning the 90 yards drag race to the first turn (holeshot), and nothing more. Some bikes listed below are blazing fast but the suspension and handling sucks. This means that a slower bike that handles great can win races, but it is too slow to break into the top 5 on this page. The 1975 CZ 250 and 1976 Maico 400 are two examples that come to mind, as both have won many races.

| (1) Ditto for Hercules, DKW, Penton and Ancillotti bikes that used the same Sachs 125cc engine.
* The 501 Maico and Yamaha SC 500 are not listed because they were not the best for motocross, even though both have monster motors. If you ask Maico riders, they will tell you that laps were faster on the 400 bike. For desert and scrambles racing the Yamaha SC 500 and Maico 501 were awesome machines!
Also not listed are some rare vintage bikes that were blazing fast such as; The 1974 Kawasaki 450 MX, Ossa 125 Phantom, Puch 250 Twin Carb, Montesa 125 Cappra, Tyran 125 MX, Rickman Zundapp 125, Rickman Montesa 250, Cagiva 125 WMX, Dalesman 125, Ammex 250, Harley Davidson 250 MX, 1980-81 Bultaco Pursang, Montesa 414, American Eagle Sprite, and Moto Villa. The Moto Villa open class bikes were darn fast. In fact, the 1980 250 Pursang was faster than any 250 made that year, but only a few were imported to the U.S.A.. If you can find any of these rare bikes, you should be playing the lottery!
